Deb while you are on the subject of colors and candles I wanted to add that some old religious as well as new age metyphisical healing groups considered certain minerals, stones, crystals etc as having specific qualities.
Such as different colored crystals giving off different energy vibrations, the colors being almost identical to the candle colors. also, the colors are associated with with what entity you are trying to connect with. for example if you were praying to the archangel Micheal you would use a blue candle or crystal while Gabriel would be white.
Stones and minerals also have properties such as hematite. Some groups use magnetically charged pieces of hematite one piece in each hand during meditation for grounding purposes. Hematite is for balance, focus and mental clarity. While others may use malachite stones to purify their energies and clear their chakras of negative energy.
Its also well known that medicine men carry different minerals, herbs. stones, etc in their medicine bags .
Metals have their own properties such as iron or silver for grounding, copper and brass for continuety of energies platinum and gold as celestial metals and so forth.

this is a website that I know of that has a list of the stones, what they are used for, and colors etc.
